The holiday marks the day when the Bahamas became an independent nation on July 10, 1973, breaking from the United Kingdom. In Washington, the country’s ambassador to the United States Sidney Collie celebrated the event with bahamas’ nationals, along with guests from several countries, at Intercontinental.
